Prince Charles appeared in a special programme of Classic FM on Tuesday night, to discuss his passion for classical music with host Alan Titchmarsh. During the candid discussion the Prince of Wales let slip a crucial role he played in his eldest son, Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton nine years ago.

In the second clip of the two-part interview aired at 8pm on Tuesday evening, Prince Charles revealed he put his classical music knowledge to good use on William and Kate's special day.

He said: "I love trying to organise some interesting, I hope, pieces of music for certain occasions… particularly for weddings if people want.

"I know my eldest son was quite understanding and was perfectly happy for me to suggest a few pieces for their wedding.

"I hope that gave some people pleasure, but it's rather fun having orchestras in for great occasions like that, and why not suggest a few pieces occasionally? Anyway... I do enjoy it."

William and Kate wed on April 29, 2001 at Westminster Abbey and a range of classical music was played to mark the special day.

Guests arrived to organ music by Johann Sebastian Bach and orchestral pieces by Edward Elgar and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies were also performed.

Three songs played at the nuptials also mimicked those at Prince Charles' wedding to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall in 2005.

Both weddings played Farewell to Stromness, Touch Her Soft Lips and Part and Romance for String Orchestra Op 11, according to The Spruce.

“It must have been in 1956 to see the Bolshoi Ballet perform.

"It was their first visit to the United Kingdom and I shall never forget that incredible occasion.”

Prince Charles said he was “completely inspired by it” and hopes to eventually impart his love of the arts in his own four grandchildren.

He said: “I was completely inspired by it.

"Which is why it's so important, I think, for grandparents or other relations to take children at about the age of seven to experience some form of the arts in performance."

During the show, the Prince of Wales spoke of his belief in the importance of musical education, which he said can have a "profound" effect on young people's lives.

He said: "It teaches self-discipline, it can help strengthen people's self-esteem and it can open up all kinds of doors on to history."
