Princess Diana died in 1997, and left a long-lasting mark on people all over the world who were besotted with the royal, dubbed the ‘People’s Princess’. A statement released on behalf of the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex said they hoped “that the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on their mother’s life and legacy”. The statue was commissioned by the princes in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death.

When will the Princess Diana statue be installed?

The statue will be placed in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace when it goes up.

It is due to be installed on July 1, 2021, to mark Princess Diana’s 60th birthday.

The Sunken Garden was famously known to be one of the Princess of Wales’s favourite places.

The statue is being designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, whose work include the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II shown on British coins.

The brother said at the time: “Ian is an extremely gifted sculptor and we know that he will create a fitting and lasting tribute to our mother.”

Princes William and Harry gathered a committee to commission the works, and it was paid for using private funds.

Announcing the commission, Princess Diana’s sons said they hoped the statue would be a permanent fixture that would help people see her “positive impact in the UK and around the world”.

August 31 will mark 23 years since Princess Diana died in a car accident in Paris.

On behalf of the Princes, Kensington Palace said: “The statue that Prince William and Prince Harry have commissioned to commemorate their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, will be installed next year on what would have been her 60th birthday.

“The statue was commissioned to mark the 20th anniversary of her death and recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world.

It is not yet known whether Prince Harry, who is currently living in Santa Barbara, California, with his wife, Meghan Markle, will return to the UK for the unveiling of the statue.

Relations between Prince William and Prince Harry are still tense after a rift that began before Meghan and Harry were married.

A book written about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Finding Freedom, states that William questioned the speed at which Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan was moving.

Prince William was also said to be furious over Harry and Meghan’s decision to go public with their plans of leaving the royal family before an agreement was reached among senior royals.
