University of Minnesota men's gymnasts Shane Wiskus, Mike Moran, and Crew Bold each competed at the 2021 Winter Cup in Indianapolis, Ind. Friday evening. Each fought to earn automatic spots on the US Men's National Team and to qualify for event finals on Sunday.
Senior Shane Wiskus, who is competing in the fourth Winter Cup of his Gopher career, was able to retain his spot on the US Men's National Team through the U.S. National Championships later this year by scoring 81.250 all-around, which earned him fourth place. In three of the six events he competed in, Wiskus scored in the top five of all competitors, including a No. 3 finish on parallel bars. Wiskus will be eligible to compete in all six events again on Sunday during the Winter Cup's event finals.
Junior Mike Moran also put together a solid all-around performance on the day, scoring a 76.850 for 14th place, and he earned a spot in Sunday's event finals. This marks back to back years that Moran has made the cut for event finals through his all-around performance, as he finished 26th in last year's competition.
Competing in his first ever Winter Cup with the Maroon & Gold, sophomore Crew Bold was able to notch competitive scores in all four events in which he competed, including a third place finish on high bar (13.450). Bold will be eligible to compete on pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars, and high bar in Sunday's event finals.
"It was great to have three Golden Gophers out there on the competition floor tonight," head coach Mike Burns said. "Hats off to USA Gymnastics for putting together an awesome event with so many protocols in place to keep everyone safe and still be able to compete at the highest level. All three of these guys had some stellar moments and some rough spots to work through but overall they fought hard and represented the Gophers like the champions they are."
Event finals for the 2021 Winter Cup are set to begin Sunday, Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m. CST on FloGymnastics.com (payment required). MyUSAGym will provide live stats for the event. Updates will also be provided on the Minnesota Men's Gymnastics Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages.
Wiskus started his night off by logging a 14.000 on floor exercise. He then moved onto pommel horse, where he scored a 12.500. Following pommel horse, Wiskus made up ground by putting up solid performances on still rings (14.000) and vault (13.700). On parallel bars, Wiskus put up his best score of the day by logging a 14.050. To finish off the day on high bar, Wiskus mimicked a move from 2019 Nationals by saving his routine with a one handed catch, a move that secured him a 13.000 in the event and fourth in the all-around competition.
The Gopher junior started his night off with a 13.850 score on floor exercise, followed by a score of 11.850 on pommel horse. Moran then moved on to still rings, where he scored a 12.750. On vault Moran logged his best score of the evening with a 14.200, before moving to parallel bars where he scored a 12.150. Moran finished the day on high bar with a score of 12.050, which was good enough to secure him 14th in the all-around competition.
To start off his first Winter Cup with Minnesota, Bold got rolling on pommel horse (10.800), before moving to still rings, where he put together a 13.300 performance in the event. After sitting out for vault, Bold's routine on parallel bars scored him an 11.550. Bold would save his best performance for last, as his 13.450 performance on high bar was good enough for the third highest score in the event on the day.
