The Broncos’ offense started Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions with the “Missing Man” formation, sending 10 players onto the field and leaving the one receiver position vacated to honor Demaryius Thomas, who died on Thursday.

On Saturday, coach Vic Fangio called Lions coach Dan Campbell to tell him of the plan and referee John Hussey was also informed.

The Broncos ran the play clock to zero and the Lions declined the penalty.

“We wanted to pay tribute to D.T. in any way we could,” Fangio said after the Broncos’ 38-10 win. “(Campbell) agreed to not accept the penalty, which was a classy move on his part.”

Said Campbell: “That was for D.T. That’s who I did that for.”

The scene was reminiscent of December 2007 when the Washington Football Team hosted the Buffalo Bills five days after safety Sean Taylor was killed in a home invasion. Washington started the game with 10 players and the Bills gained 22 yards on a carry by running back Fred Jackson.

There was better communication between the Broncos and Lions. After the declined penalty, receiver Courtland Sutton joined the offense on the field and the game began.

“That was a special moment to be a part of something like that,” quarterback Teddy Bridgewater said. “This organization was paying homage to somebody who did so many great things, not only on the football field, but off the field.”

Young injured. Broncos inside linebacker Kenny Young was placed in the league’s concussion protocol after being injured against the Lions. Defensive end Dre’Mont Jones (foot) also did not finish the game.

Returning from in-game injuries were running back Melvin Gordon (hand), tight end Noah Fant (thigh), defensive end Shelby Harris (knee) and safety Kareem Jackson (evaluated for a concussion).

Family gets game ball. Fangio said he gave a game ball to Sutton and receiver Tim Patrick so they can send it to Thomas’ family. Also receiving game balls were Jones, running backs Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams and equipment manager Chris Valenti, whose mother recently passed away.

Footnotes. The Broncos announced 10,005 no-shows. … Tight end Noah Fant’s 32-yard catch in the first half was a season-high. … Cornerback Bryce Callahan, activated from injured reserve on Saturday, was active for the game but played no snaps; Kyle Fuller played the nickel back role. … The Broncos have opened as a one-point home favorite next Sunday vs. Cincinnati.
