Red Sox clear roster spot by outrighting Ronaldo Hernández to WooSox - MassLive.com

The Red Sox opened up a 40-man roster spot Friday by outrighting catcher Ronaldo Hernández to Triple-A Worcester.

Hernández cleared waivers and will remain with the organization as a non-40-man player. So Boston now only has 39 players on its 40-man roster. There’s a spot open if the club wants to add someone like a free agent or waiver claim.

That doesn’t necessarily mean another move is imminent, though with the club actively looking at ways to improve the roster this time of year, it provides a little flexibility. Of course, if the Sox were to sign a free agent, they could have just designated Hernández for assignment as the counter move.

Hernández, who turned 25 last month, heated up toward the end of last season at Triple-A Worcester and finished with a .261/.298/.451 line and .749 OPS in 105 games. The backstop slugged 17 homers in his second year with the organization. He was formerly the top catching prospect in the Rays system before Tampa Bay traded him to Boston for pitchers Jeffrey Springs and Chris Mazza in Feb. 2021. Our Chris Smith recently reported that Hernández has a fourth option, meaning he could have been freely sent back and forth between the majors in the minors in 2023 if he was still on the 40-man roster. Now, he’ll provide catching depth as a non-roster player.

Reese McGuire and Connor Wong are now the only two catchers on Boston’s 40-man roster. Hernández and Caleb Hamilton, who was also recently outrighted off the 40-man roster, are projected to be the top depth options at Triple-A. Boston still may add a starting catcher before Opening Day.
