DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings discovered a winning formula on the road and brought it home with them on Thursday.

Andrew Copp collected three points (goal, two assists) against his former team and Ville Husso made 30 saves as the Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings (28-21-8) have 64 points, tying them with Florida for the second wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They have three games in hand on the Panthers.

The Red Wings were coming off a strong 4-1 trip. They have won seven-of-eight and are 9-3 in their past 12.

Copp’s linemates had big nights as well. Michael Rasmussen scored a goal and added an assist in addition to providing a physical presence. David Perron picked up a pair of assists.

Filip Zadina and Filip Hronek also scored for Detroit. Husso improved to 23-13-5.

The Rangers (33-16-9) are winless in three (0-2-1) following a seven-game winning streak.

Zadina snapped a 1-1 tie at 8:18 of the second period with his second goal in 16 games this season. Dylan Larkin forced a turnover at the blue line, getting the puck to Zadina, who whipped in a shot from the flank past Jaroslav Halak.

Rasmussen scored his 10th goal at 18:02. Perron corralled his own rebound and passed out front to Rasmussen, who tapped the puck into an empty net after Halak had slid out to make the original save.

Hronek put Detroit ahead 4-1 with a power-play goal, his ninth, at 4:51 of the third.

The game got chippy in the third period as the Red Wings drew the Rangers’ ire with a couple of big hits – Rasmussen on Artemi Panarin and Jake Walman on Vincent Trocheck.

Copp opened the scoring at 15:33 of the first period with his sixth goal, set up nicely with a backhand pass from Rasmussen.

Trocheck tied it at 6:06 of the second, capitalizing on a turnover by Robert Hagg.

The Red Wings then took over and closed it out. Husso’s biggest stop was a highlight-reel skate save on Adam Fox with 2:40 remaining in the second period to preserve a 2-1 lead.
