Missing mom Suzanne Morphew's body in a very difficult spot as investigators seek to prove she was murdered - New York Post

Investigators believe they know where missing Colorado mom Suzanne Morphew’s body is located, but that it is “in a very difficult spot” and that gathering enough evidence to prove she was murdered could still take years.

“She is in a very difficult spot. We actually have more than just a feeling … and the sheriff’s office is continuing to look for Mrs. Morphew’s body,” 11th Judicial Deputy District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said Monday, according to the Denver Gazette.

Hurlbert made the stunning claim during a hearing called by attorneys for Barry Morphew — the missing woman’s husband and former suspect in her murder — who requested to keep records in the case sealed indefinitely.

Barry Morphew, 55, remains a suspect even though charges against him were dropped just before his trial, authorities said.

Investigators said their probe could take months or even years to determine whether the 49-year-old mother — who never returned from a bike ride in 2020 while her husband was away on business — was murdered.

The records unsealed this week are comprised of intimate conversations Suzanne Morphew sent her best friend, Sheila Oliver, detailing her failing marriage and plans to leave her husband of 25 years.

Details of the troubled marriage were relayed by Oliver during Barry Morphew’s August 2021 evidentiary hearing.

At the time of her disappearance, Suzanne Morphew was having a long-distance affair with a high school flame and wanted to leave her husband for him.

Law enforcement discovered she was having an affair when they found a spy pen she had placed in Barry Morphew’s car when she suspected him of having an affair.

Oliver told investigators that Suzanne Morphew wanted to leave her husband, who she felt was turning their two daughters, Macy and Mallory, against her.

In an interview last month, Macy and Mallory held hands with their father and said they “never had a shred of doubt” about his innocence as he sues for $15 million over since-dropped murder charges.

Both daughters have denied noticing troubles in their parents’ marriage, even though text messages in which the missing mom said she was “done” with her “Jekyl and Hyde” husband.

In the texts, Suzanne Morphew said she “had a very tough talk” with Macy, who was “weary of the tension here” and “begged” her to get a divorce. “He’s still pulling Mal in,” another message read.

Other text messages Suzanne Morphew sent to Oliver revealed she felt her husband was possessive, describing him to her friend as “narcissistic.”

Her husband has denied any involvement in his wife’s disappearance and claimed the two “had a wonderful life, a wonderful marriage,” even as he remains the prime suspect in the case.

“My heart was broke … my heart was broken,” he said of discovering his wife’s cheating. “I didn’t believe it,” he said, noting her battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma was difficult and caused her to make “some bad decisions.”

Suzanne Morphew’s phone was never found, but authorities were able to pull up her text messages by searching Oliver’s phone.

The missing mother’s body has also never been recovered, hindering authorities from convicting Barry Morphew in the case.

The case was ultimately dismissed without prejudice in 2022, meaning it can eventually be retried if authorities uncover enough evidence.

“We are going to continue to look for her body,” the district attorney said. “We are simply trying to get this case prosecutable, whether that is against the defendant or against somebody else.”
