New NoDa bar wants to be a hangout spot for artists

A new bar and art gallery called Art Room is scheduled to open later this month just north of NoDa.

Why it matters: The bar will include local artists of all mediums — from murals on the exterior walls to paintings inside — but more than that, co-owner Markus Hunter hopes the space becomes a hangout for Charlotte artists.

Background: Hunter says the idea started while he was bored at home during quarantine. Relatable?

Hunter and his business partner Justin Hargrove acted on the idea, securing the former Red Fox Lounge space on Sugar Creek Road and transforming it into a cool club.

The space: Expect plush velvet couches, a flower wall, a DJ booth, and a bar inside the 1,100-square-foot interior. Outside are five firepits, string lights, plenty of seating and hookah. Garage doors connect the two spaces so you can order a drink without going inside.

Most of the construction is complete so now they’re focused on installing art. Muralist Kalin Devone is finishing up a black-and-white piece on one wall inside. Outside a mural of Jimi Hendrix was done by Alex DeLarge of Southern Tiger Collective.

Art and entertainment: In addition to displaying and selling local art, Art Room will also host events (once it’s safe to do so):

  • Paint-and-sip classes.
  • Live music from local artists.
  • Poetry nights.
  • “Battle walls” where two artists will compete and paint in real time.

Drinks: Art Room will have a full bar, plus beer and wine. Cocktails start at $9.

Finishing touches are going inside like a flower wall, mural and an art gallery wall.

Timeline: They’re planning to open this month with reduced capacity and an emphasis on their outdoor patio.

What’s next: Hunter and Hargrove hope this business is just a start. “Our goal is to outgrow this space, and then build the next business.”

Hours: To start, Art Room will be open 5 to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 1 to 10 p.m. on weekends in accordance with the governor’s executive order. Eventually, it’ll remain open until 2 a.m.

Location: 1001 E. Sugar Creek Rd. near the Sugar Creek light rail station just north of NoDa.
