Prior to Friday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Steve Nash said the Nets are likely to sign a free agent rather than upgrade either of their two-way players to fill the open roster spot they have to close by Saturday. The Nets have two roster spots after signing Norvel Pelle on Thursday. It’s anticipated they’ll wait to fill the final roster spot later in the season.
“I guess it’s possible to sign one of our two-way guys, but I think we’re probably looking to sign somebody on a free agent deal,” Nash said.
By trading four players and receiving only James Harden in the four-team deal concluded January 16, the Nets were left with three openings. Currently they have 13 players on standard NBA contracts as well as Reggie Perry and Chris Chiozza on two-way deals. The league requires 14. NBA rules give teams two weeks after a trade to add players either through free agency, trades, two-way upgrades or waiver claim.
As for some of the free agents available, Andre Roberson and former Net Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, both solid wing defenders, are among players to keep in mind come Saturday.
Pelle, who’s signing became official Thursday, is expected to join the team Sunday in Washington. Nash talked about Pelle, saying his conditioning and game readiness will determine his opportunity.
“As far as his profile, he’s a rim-protecting center who can block shots,” Nash said on Pelle. “A lob threat hidden behind the defense so we’ll see as we go here how well physically he is going to adapt and playing in the NBA again after a little layoff, get onto speed, and see if he gets an opportunity.”
Peller was signed to an Exhibit 10 deal by the Cavaliers in December then cut a day later. He was destined for the Cavs’ G League affiliate before the Nets picked him up.
