Former UFC champion Jon Jones, like Clemson quarterback and projected top NFL pick Trevor Lawrence, has had enough of rapper Lil Nas X, whose customized 'Satan' Air Max Nike sneakers have generated a firestorm on social media this week.
The sneakers are numbered to 666 pairs, have a pentagram on the tongue and contain a drop of human blood — reportedly. They are not sanctioned by Nike, however, and are part of a collaboration between Lil Nas X and New York-based art collective MSCHF. The group released a pair of custom Air Maxes in 2019 that contained 60cc of holy water from the River Jordan.
Jones, who has scripture tattooed on his body, is disgusted by MSCHF's latest creation.
"Tomorrow morning I’m going to burn all my Nike shoes, you will never catch me in that (expletive) again," Jones tweeted this week.
After one of his followers showed Jones that Nike wasn't behind the idea and has filed a lawsuit against the designers, Jones tweeted, ""OK, now I’m seeing there is a lawsuit. Glad to know Nike isn’t behind this BS."
The "Satan" sneakers from Lil Nas X are being sold at $1,018 a pair and have a bible verse — Luke 10:18 — across the forefoot that reads: "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." The "Old Town Road" rapper tweeted on Sunday night a photo of another Nike-based customized Air Max sneaker, this team with a Chick-fil-A insignia, a clear shot at believers.
The lawsuit claims that MSCHF artists made modifications to the Nike sneakers after they are made, according to TMZ. That is leading to a trademark infringement because the Nike logo is still on the shoe, despite not being approved by the company. Nike is asking the judge to block all sales of the shoe, according to TMZ.
According to CBS News, Nike argued the shoes are "likely to cause confusion and dilution and create an erroneous association between MSCHF's products and Nike," alleging that there's "already evidence of significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF's Satan Shoes based on the mistaken belief that Nike has authorized or approved this product."
The lawsuit states, "as a direct and proximate result of MSCHF's wrongful acts, Nike has suffered, continues to suffer, and/or is likely to suffer damage to its trademarks, business reputation, and goodwill that money cannot compensate. Unless enjoined, MSCHF will continue to use Nike's Asserted Marks and/or confusingly similar marks and will cause irreparable damage to Nike for which Nike has no adequate remedy at law."
