Mid-Am Day 3: Brown snags final spot in field of 64 by holing out for eagle - The Inquirer and Mirror

(Sept 27, 2021) The U.S. Mid-Amateur field has been whittled down from 264 players to just 64, after the stroke play portion of the event completed early this afternoon.

Thirteen players who finished stroke play tied at 2-over-par battled it out for the final seven spots in the match play event, in a sudden death playoff taking place at the 10th and then 15th holes at Sankaty Head Golf Club.

Hayes Brown snagged the last qualifying spot in style, holing out for eagle on the second playoff hole, the 407-yard par-four 15th. Hayes was 98-yards out after his drive and hit a 58-degree wedge that bounced onto the green and rolled right into the cup.

For the rest of the week, players will play head-to-head elimination matches at Sankaty Head until there is one player left standing.

Although the first round of head-to-head matches got underway late this afternoon, it appears only a handful will be completed before dark today. The rest will pick up where they left off tomorrow morning.

Yaroslav Merkulov’s 9-under-par was the lowest score in stroke play and also a U.S. Mid-Am record. That earned him the number one-seed and he is facing off against Brown, the 64th-seed.
