PURCHASE, N.Y. – When qualifying began for the 122nd U.S. Open Championship, there were nearly 9,000 pro and amateur golfers competing for just 65 open spots.
When qualifying finished on Monday, one of those precious spots belonged to Caleb Manuel.
Manuel (Topsham, Me.), who led the UConn men's golf team in scoring in each of the past two years and is the Huskies' top career scorer, fired a brilliant 3-under par 69-68=37 on two courses in Purchase, N.Y., on Monday to tie for medalist honors and secure a berth in the U.S. Open. The Open will be played on June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
There were 92 golfers at the Purchase sectional, competing for just five places in the Open. Manuel recorded four birdies on his way to a 1-under 69 in Round 1 at the Old Oaks Country Club and followed with four more birdies as he shot a 2-under 68 in Round 2 at the Century Country Club.
Manuel tied Chris Gotterup (Little Silver, N.J., 67-70=137) for medalist honors. Brandon Matthews (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Michael Thorbjornsen (Wellesley, Mass.) and Fran Quinn (Holden, Mass.) each shot 2-under to secure the other three Open spots.
Manuel was one of four golfers out of 65 who qualified in local qualifying on May 9 with a 2-over 74 at the Golf Club at Oxford Greens (Oxford, Conn.) to earn a spot in the Purchase sectional.
He won two tournaments last season at UConn, including co-medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship for a berth in the NCAA Regionals. He averaged 70.94 per round last season, with eight Top 10 finishes.
Manuel joins other UConn golf alumni who have earned a place in recent U.S. Opens – Eric Dietrich qualified for the 119th Open at Pebble Beach in 2019, while Zach Zaback and Jimmy Hervol each won a berth in 2021 at the 121st Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
