Pa. winery salvages spot damaged by fire, opens for business - PennLive

For years, one of Pennsylvania’s best wineries was operating exclusively behind a gate.

Karamoor Estate primarily used its beautifully appointed tasting room with a deck overlooking a portion of its more than 20 acres of vineyards for specific events, and by reservation only.

The tasting room sits in the middle of a 250-acre gated estate outside Blue Bell, Montgomery County.

That issue of access was finally going to be rectified with the renovation of a barn that sits on Butler Pike, at the edge of the property and outside the gate.

With the completion nearing after five years of work, the barn was seriously damaged by an overnight fire that occurred just before Thanksgiving 2020. Compounded by the pandemic, any plans were put aside for months.

In 2021, work commenced on saving what was left and the result – The Terrace at Karamoor – was unveiled this May.

A roof was put over a couple of the remaining beams, with the tasting bar and a few tables and chairs beneath it. More table and chairs, some with umbrellas to block out the sun, were scattered on gravel in front of the tasting bar, aside the driveway that leads through the gate to the tasting room and winery.

It’s a comfortable spot to relax and try a flight of Karamoor’s award-winning wines, or purchase them by the glass or bottle.

All the wines are dry; a just-released rose has a bit of residual sugar, giving the winery an off-dry for customers who like a little sweetness.

The dry list includes a mix of whites – from Chardonnay to Sauvignon Blanc – and reds – Cabernet Franc and Meritage. Karamoor recently won awards in three national competitions: the 2022 Sunset International Wine Competition (Sonoma County, California), the International Women’s Wine Competition and the San Francisco Chronicle Competition.

The hours are 2 to 7 p.m. Fridays and 1 to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

No reservations are required.
