Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Who Is The Spot? - MovieWeb

Spider-Man comic book fans are stoked about Miles Morales' impending battle with The Spot, an interdimensional villain and former scientist who now wields fearsome and seemingly unbeatable multidimensional powers. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's Twitter page teased his character's introduction to the beloved spider-verse, and a recently released first look gave fans a lot to be excited about.

As Miles teams up with his fellow multidimensional Spider-Men once again, they will have big adventures and even bigger villains to tackle before they can restore multi-universal balance to the universes. While The Spot isn't the only new face in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, he is the one we are most excited about right now. Here is everything we know about Marvel Comics' The Spot and what his interactions with Miles and the Spider-Men might be like!

The Spot's Creation and His Powers

The Spot is a villain who is physically made entirely of portals due to an experiment gone not quite right. In the Marvel Spider-Man comics, The Spot was formerly the scientist Dr. Jonathan Ohnn. He worked for the Daredevil villain Kingpin on a project to harness the power of dark energy from a place called the Darkforce dimension, to which the character Cloak had recourse. Dr. Ohnn ultimately succeeded in creating a portal to the Darkforce dimension. However, it actively destroyed the city, so Dr. Ohnn stepped through his portal and entered the darkness to see what he could find to keep his portal open and retain his greatest invention.

Dr. Ohnn eventually made his way back into his own world, but he was covered in the different portals that he found in the dark dimension. Now having a dalmatian-like appearance, he is able to fight any Marvel superhero with the power of instant teleportation to various dimensions across his body, even simultaneously.

The Spot can extend his body over multiple dimensions and teleport his antagonists anywhere. Several comics depict Spider-Man throwing a punch at The Spot only to hit nothing but a portal. He also, importantly, is invisible to Spider-Man's Spider-sense because he is multidimensional. Finally, the key to defeating The Spot in the comics is to wait until he runs out of spots to teleport in and out of because he does not have the ability to regenerate them constantly.

In the new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (the title makes a lot of sense to fans now) first look, we see Miles Morales' Spider-Man falling through many portals, seemingly triggered by a much-missed Gwen Stacy in the universe where she is Spider-Man, but no sign of The Spot yet. His presence in the film was announced by the movie's official Twitter site, with a still depicting him reaching for Miles as Gwen has been shoved out of the way, exciting fans as to the possibilities.

The Voice of The Spot

The Spot will be voiced by Jason Schwartzman (The Righteous Gemstones, The French Dispatch). However, he and his highly anticipated villain are not the only new additions to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Writers Chris Lord and Phil Miller announced at CinemaCon 2022 that Across the Spider-Verse will feature 240 characters throughout its six universes, with over a thousand people working to bring them to life. This is the largest team of animators on a movie ever.

So far, we know that Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker) is getting his own Spider-Man in a newly introduced universe, with his character making a quick appearance trying to save Miles in the first look. There is no word yet on any other new characters.

The film is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos of The Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender, Kemp Powers of One Night in Miami, and Justin K. Thompson of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

When Will We See The Spot on the Big Screen?

From the first look, we can glean that Miles Morales' secret crush on Gwen Stacy, who still mourns the loss of Peter Parker in her universe, and blames herself for his tragic death, will be a centerpiece of the film. At some point, Miles will have to come clean, and they will, if not get together, at least have to reach an understanding. It is not yet known if Gwen returns the sentiment or will someday be able to. We also learn from the first look that Miles is in college now and has a dorm of his own, making his time in his juvenile childhood bedroom awkward, especially when Gwen shows up.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on June 2nd, 2023, but we expect to see more trailers and first looks before that time!
