Fans might hear Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s last bark Tuesday if the Arizona Diamondbacks reach the 2023 World Series.
The former WFAN star said Monday, before the Diamondbacks won Game 6 of the NLCS on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies to stave off elimination, that if Arizona won the series by taking the final two games he would retire.
“To make a long story short, I’ve been wrong on Arizona from Day 1,” Russo, 64, said on his SiriusXM radio show, as captured by Funhouse on X. “I’m stunned they beat Milwaukee, I thought they’d get swept by the Dodgers, I never thought they’d even go back to Philly for a Game 6.
“I’ll try it one more time: I would not be stunned if they won [Monday night], I would be floored. … If they win the next two days, they win the next two games and win this series in seven games, if they win, I will retire on the spot.”
The Diamondbacks, who snuck into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed in the National League at 84-78 despite losing their last four regular-season games, won 5-1 Monday night to force a Game 7 on Tuesday.
They’ve been on a shocking run, sweeping the Brewers in the best-of-three wild-card round and sweeping the Dodgers in the best-of-five NLDS.
This is Arizona’s third NLCS appearance since its inaugural season in 1998, and their only World Series appearance was their seven-game victory over the Yankees in 2001.
Brandon Pfaadt is set to start Game 7 for the Diamondbacks, while Ranger Suarez will get things started for the Phillies at 8:07 p.m.
The winning team will face the Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday after the Rangers beat the Houston Astros on Monday in Game 7 of the ALCS.
Russo, who hosted “Mike and the Mad Dog” with Mike Francesa on WFAN from 1989-2008, currently hosts “High Heat” on MLB Network and appears on ESPN’s “First Take” every Wednesday.
