Derby creates Adopt-A-Spot program to beautify city, bolster pride - New Haven Register

DERBY — The city has adopted a new program aimed at beautifying barren spots — near intersections, under sign posts and around public buildings — with plants and flowers.

The Board of Aldermen recently approved an Adopt-A-Spot program that will target select public parcels in need of a makeover.

The program aims to encourage residents, organizations and businesses to participate in regular beautification efforts and litter cleanups for designated areas throughout the city.

According to Mayor Richard Dziekan, the program also will help reduce the number of hours the Public Works Department devotes at each of the designated areas, so manpower and hours can be redirected elsewhere.

“The past couple of years, we introduced the annual citywide cleanup effort by City Hall,” Dziekan said. “This new Adopt-A-Spot program is a great addition to the ongoing beautification of our great city.”

Alderman Rob Hyder, coordinator of the Adopt-A-Spot program, said sprucing up the city is a great thing, and already was generating interest prior to its approval.

“Before the Derby Adopt-A-Spot program was initiated, local businesses were calling City Hall looking to participate,” Hyder said.

A one-time sponsor fee to adopt a specific location for a predetermined number of years will cost $475. The fee covers the cost of a sign bearing the name and logo of the individual, organization or business, as well as installation of the sign.

“The signage is a great way for businesses and organizations to advertise at a nominal fee in comparison to other methods,” Hyder added. “The longer a site is adopted and maintained, the more economical the sponsor fee becomes.”

A list of locations up for adoption previously was approved, but those who wish to participate in Adopt-A-Spot are welcome to propose alternate locations for consideration. Some spots approved for a makeover include the island at David Humphries and Sentinel Hill roads; the “Welcome to Derby” sign between Route 34 and Old New Haven Avenue; the monument at Main Street and Derby Avenue; the entrance to Witek Park opposite Ridge Road; the entrance to Witek Park Soccer Fields; the island at the Greenway Entrance at BJ’s; the entrance to Leo F. Ryan Athletic Complex at McEvoy Court; and several others.

A list of the available, approved spots can be found on the city’s website, and those interested in participating can fill out an application online. For more information, call City Hall at 203-736-1450, ext. 221.

Susan Giordano, who owns Whiteys Marina on the Housatonic River, already has adopted the island at Cedric Avenue and Route 34. She said the program will provide good exposure in advertising for people to rent the boat docks on the river for summer fun and recreation.

Hyder said the program is a great opportunity for folks to beautify high-profile locations while showcasing pride throughout the community.

Neighboring Ansonia adopted its own Adopt-A-Spot program in 2018, and has had great participation from local businesses, civic groups, non profits and individuals. Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti has said the program boosts city pride among those who participate, by investing in their community while getting a boost in exposure through advertising.
