George Springer to remain in leadoff spot for Astros - Houston Chronicle

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — One certainty will remain amid all the Astros’ upheaval — George  Springer’s name atop the opening day batting order.

Springer will continue to hit leadoff for the club under new manager Dusty Baker, who said Sunday the slugger reminds him of legendary leadoff hitters like Bobby Bonds and Felipe Alou.

“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” Baker quipped. “It’s good the way it is.”

Since moving to the leadoff spot permanently in May 2016, Springer’s set two single-season franchise records for leadoff home runs. He struck 12 last season, one shy of tying the major league record for a season. His 15 playoff home runs are the most by a leadoff hitter in major league history.

Springer’s won two of his Silver Sluggers while batting leadoff. He hit a career-high 39 homers last season and finished with a .974 OPS.

“(Springer) can either get on base or (make it) 1-0 in our favor,” Baker said. “This guy is one of the best. You don’t win (Silver Sluggers) just by taking (pitches). I love it, actually.”
