POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Union College men's basketball team had its postseason hopes take a hit on Friday night, as the Dutchmen faltered on the road in a 92-85 defeat at Clarkson University at Alumni Gym.

With the loss, Union (11-12, 8-9 Liberty League) sits in seventh place in the conference standings with one game left to play. Luckily for the Dutchmen, the team still controls its own postseason destiny and only needs to beat fourth-place St. Lawrence University tomorrow in order to clinch a playoff spot. The team can still finish anywhere from fourth to seventh in the standings, depending on tomorrow's results.

Three Dutchmen reached the 20-point plateau in a losing effort. Junior Justin Regis knocked down 7-of-11 shots from long range to finish with a team-high 22 points to go with five assists and four rebounds, while senior Mike Manley also connected on seven triples to end the night with 21 points and a game-high seven assists. Classmate Brian Noone also scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting on the night.

As a team, Union shot a sizzling 51.4 percent (18 of 35) from beyond the arc, the most threes in a game since knocking down 19 in a double-overtime win at St. Lawrence on February 22, 2017 and the most in a regulation contest in over a decade.

Union started the game slowly, as four turnovers contributed to a 9-3 Clarkson lead over the first 3:36 of the contest. The home team remained in front until an 11-3 run – helped by three three-pointers from Regis – gave Union its first lead of the night at 31-29 with 6:10 left. However, Clarkson (6-18, 3-14 Liberty League) netted seven points in a row to retake the lead and later closed with an 8-2 run to take a 44-38 lead into intermission.

Regis had the hot hand for Union in the opening half, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the field on the way to 15 points. Union shot 45.5 percent (15 of 33) as a team in the opening 20 minutes, including an 8-of-16 effort from beyond the arc, while Clarkson finished the opening half at 42.5 percent (17 of 40) from the field.

Union clawed back early in the second half to regain the lead after a Manley three put the visitors up 59-58 with 15:07 remaining. However, a 13-2 run by Clarkson soon after made the score 71-62 in favor of the home team with under 10 minutes left and sent Union into comeback mode. Regis capped an 11-2 run with a three-pointer to knot the score at 77 with 4:35 on the clock, but Union could never retake the lead. Two quick buckets by Clarkson's Blake Gearhart put the Golden Knights back up for good, as the home team hit enough field goals and free throws down the stretch to keep Union from completing its comeback.

Union will look to keep its season alive tomorrow in the regular-season finale at St. Lawrence University beginning at 4 p.m.
