NORMAN – For the fourth straight season, Oklahoma men's golf is represented in the preseason Fred Haskins National Player of the Year watch list. Redshirt senior Patrick Welch was one of 25 collegiate golfers named to the list, the Fred Haskins Award committee announced Thursday.

Welch, who enters the upcoming season ranked No. 9 in the PGA TOUR U rankings, is a three-time All-America honorable mention and has already compiled one of the best careers in OU history. He seeks to make it back-to-back Sooners that have won the Fred Haskins Award, as Chris Gotterup became the first Sooner to win the nation's highest honor last season.

"To win the Haskins Award would truly be an honor," Welch said. "To have your name on that trophy means that you were the best player in college all year long. I'm honored to be on the preseason list and can't wait for the year to start."

Welch's career scoring average of 71.60 (0.18) is the fourth best in Oklahoma history and third among players with over 100 rounds. In addition, he broke the school record for low round vs. par when he signed for a 62 (-10) in the opening round of the 2022 Puerto Rico Classic. The champion of the 2020 East Lake Cup and 2022 Southern Highlands Collegiate, Welch will look to become the seventh Sooner to collect three college wins.

Welch is one of four Big 12 golfers on the preseason watch list.

Celebrating its 53rd year, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel has been given to players who have captured 33 major championships and more than 400 professional tournaments worldwide. Past recipients include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, and Justin Thomas. In addition, Chris Gotterup (Oklahoma) won the 52nd Haskins Award in 2022. The Fred Haskins Award is the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, golf SID's, and select golf media. Golf Channel and Golfweek are media partners for the Fred Haskins Award.
