Bayonne City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski will be in the top position on the ballot in the upcoming May 10 municipal election. Incumbent Mayor James Davis drew the second spot and Dr. Mitchell Brown drew the third.

On Monday, March 21, Bayonne City Clerk Madelene Medina held the drawing for ballot positions for the 2022 municipal election. Medina conducted the drawing in the City Council Chambers in the presence of several candidates, campaign representatives, and municipal officials.

For Council Member At-Large, Bayonne Board of Education Trustee Jodi Casais will appear at 4B and Executive Director of the Police Athletic League “KT” Kim Torello at 5B. Both are backed by Ashe-Nadrowski as part of the “Let’s Fix Bayonne Together” slate and bracketed together.

Running as an independent under the slogan “Independent Voice for a Better Bayonne,” Board of Education Trustee Denis Wilbeck will placed next at 6B, followed by “Team Davis” consisting of former police officer Loyad Booker at 7B and incumbent City Councilman At-Large Juan Perez at 8B. Rounding out the Council Member at Large column is Bayonne businesswoman Carissa Lintao at 9B, running under the “New Bayonne” banner.

In the contest for First Ward Council Member, incumbent Councilman Neil Carroll will appear in the top position, repping “Team Davis.” Ashe-Nadrowski-backed Julie Sanchez Lynch will appear below that.

For Second Ward Council Member, George Vinc, who is running on Ashe-Nadrowski’s “Let’s Fix Bayonne Together” slate, secured the top spot. Davis-backed Jacqueline Weimmer will appear below.

And for Third Ward Council Member, Peter Franco, who is running independent of a slate, will appear a the top spot as 10C, followed by “Team Davis”-backed incumbent Councilman Gary La Pelusa at 11C, with Ashe-Nadrowski-backed Board of Education President Maria Valado at the bottom as 12C.

Former Board of Education Trustee Michael Alonso will not appear on the ballot for the May 10 municipal election in the city, despite his best efforts to do so.

Lawsuit withdrawn

Alonso had filed an 11-page lawsuit in Hudson County Superior Court on March 15 against City Clerk Madelene Medina and Hudson County Clerk E. Junior Maldonado, alleging Medina “wrongfully and unlawfully” said many of Alonso’s signatures for his petition were invalid.

March 7 was the last day for which petitions could be filed to run in the upcoming municipal election. On that day, Alonso hand-delivered the signatures to the Clerk’s Office, however, his signatures to file his petitions were rejected.

According to the suit, despite allegedly having a sufficient number of signatures, Alonso claimed the signatures were “wrongfully and unlawfully” rejected. Per the lawsuit, Alonso filed 976 signatures of the 434 were required, but the Municipal Clerk rejected the filing because the format of approximately 409 of the signatures were submitted in an electronic fashion.

Medina informed Alonso that she could not accept his petition for filing unless he got a court order to do so, according to the suit. He cited Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order for electronic collection and submission of signatures on election petitions for candidates in the state of New Jersey amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Alonso’s suit also cited the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act to allow the electronic signatures.

Alonso’s suit sought to have his signatures accepted, his petition filed, and he be allowed to appear on the ballot for the May 10 election. The lawsuit sought relief prior to the ballot drawing on March 21, or a redrawing with his name included if it had already taken place.

Alonso sought to run in 2022, but did not submit enough valid signatures for his nominating petition to file.

Alonso not on ballot

The ballot drawing was postponed due to the lawsuit. However, according to Law Director Jay Coffey, a court hearing the morning of March 21 confirmed Alonso would not appear on the ballot. He has since withdrawn his legal challenge.

“Bottom line is, he won’t be on the ballot,” Coffey told the Bayonne Community News.

According to Coffey, the court found electronic signatures to be allowable, given Murphy’s executive order regarding the pandemic. However, he said that at the hearing, Alonso admitted he didn’t have enough signatures. The court agreed, and he will not appear on the ballot, Coffey said.

Alonso did not respond to numerous BCN requests for comment following the ruling.

A registered Republican employed as a real estate agent, Alonso was elected to the Board of Education in 2017. However, he lost re-election in 2020 after his remarks following the police killing of George Floyd, which many saw as racist.

Alonso announced he was running for mayor in January of this year, offering a rebuttal to Davis’ State of the City 2022 address in late February before failing to file enough signatures in March. Now, it appears the race will remain a three-way bout between Davis, Ashe-Nadrowski, and Brown on May 10.
