flickdoco.blogspot.com
TUCSON, Ariz. – The fifth-seeded North Carolina women's basketball team will compete in hostile territory Monday evening for the opportunity to extend the season, taking on host Arizona for a spot in the Greensboro Region Sweet 16.

Game time at the fourth-seeded Wildcats' McKale Center is 10 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. in Mountain Standard Time. The matchup, the final tip-off of the NCAA Tournament second round, will air on ESPN2.

UNC (24-6) is looking for its first Sweet 16 trip since 2015, when the Tar Heels were also playing in the Greensboro Regional. Carolina advanced with a 79-66 first-round win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.

Arizona (21-7) beat UNLV 72-67 to advance.

Monday's matchup is the first-ever women's basketball meeting between Carolina and Arizona.

Tar Heels vs. Wildcats
The Tar Heels and Wildcats will face off Monday for the first time in program history.
The two have had just one common opponent this season: both played and picked up close wins against Louisville. Monday's opponents handed the Cardinals, currently ranked No. 4, two of their four losses this season.
• Arizona beat the Cardinals 61-59 in overtime on Nov. 12 in Sioux Falls, S.D., in the Wildcats' second game of the regular season.
• UNC beat the Cardinals 66-65 in Chapel Hill on Feb. 17.

Tournament Tar Heels
North Carolina earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid for the second year in a row and is seeded fifth in the Greensboro Region.
• UNC is making its 29th NCAA Tournament appearance and is 48-27 overall (including the first-round win this season) with an NCAA Championship in 1994 and Final Fours in 1994, 2006 and 2007.
• Prior to this year, the Tar Heels' most recent NCAA Tournament victory was in 2015 – they've made two appearances since then, with first-round losses in 2019 and 2021.
• Prior to this year, UNC last won a tournament game away from Chapel Hill in 2014. That year, Carolina opened with two wins at home and advanced to the regional semifinal in Stanford, Calif., where the Tar Heels knocked off top-seeded South Carolina in the Sweet 16. UNC fell to host Stanford, the No. 2 seed, in the regional final.
• The Tar Heels are 22-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament games in Chapel Hill and 26-26 in games away from home, including 2022.
• UNC is a No. 5 seed for the third time in school history and is 4-2 overall in the previous two appearances, with all three including a trip out west. The previous times were:
2000: UNC played and won its first two games in Santa Barbara, Calif., (but didn't face host UCSB, the No. 4 seed, which was knocked out in the first round) then advanced on to the regional semifinal in Portland, Ore. There, the Tar Heels fell to top-seeded Georgia.
2011: UNC played and won its first two games in Albuquerque, N.M., a neutral site. The Tar Heels beat No. 4 Kentucky to advance to the regional semifinal in Spokane, Wash., where they fell to top-seeded Stanford.
• The Tar Heels are 20-6 all-time in first-round games, with two of those six losses coming in their last two tournament appearances, in 2019 and 2021. (On three occasions – 1986, 1987 and 1993 – UNC got first-round byes.) UNC is 16-5 in second-round games.

Trending
• Five Tar Heels have scored in double figures in each of the past two games (ACC Quarterfinals loss to Va Tech in OT, NCAA 1st round win over SFA). UNC has had five or more in double figures six times this season, but the past two games are the only instances since December.
Deja Kelly's 20 points in the second half on Saturday marked the highest total by a Tar Heel in a half this season.
Carlie Littlefield has led UNC in rebounding in two of the past three games, with a career-high 10 in the final regular season game vs. Duke, her Senior Night celebration, and nine in Saturday's win over SFA. The 5-9 point guard is averaging 7.7 rebounds over the past three games, 3.8 per game this season.
• Carolina has won the rebounding battle in its last 10 games in a row. The Tar Heels were last outrebounded on Jan. 30 by NC State (beaten 41-36 on the boards in a 66-58 loss). In the 10 games since then, Carolina is outrebounding opponents by a +8.2 margin (42.0 to 33.8). For the season, the team's rebounding margin is +7.4 (43.1 to 35.7).
• After going 4-4 in January, the Tar Heels were 7-1 in February. They're 1-1 so far in March.
Alyssa Ustby has five double-doubles in the past 10 games and is averaging 13.3 ppg and 9.3 rpg over that span. She ranks fourth in the league in rebounds with 8.6 per game this season. In a nod to her versatility, she's the only player in the ACC who ranks in the top five in both offensive (2nd, 3.0 per game) and defensive (4th, 5.57 per game) rebounds per game.

Numbers of Note
• Monday's game will be No. 55 at Carolina for sophomores Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Williams and Alyssa Ustby. All three have played in every game in the past two seasons and have started all 30 this year.
• UNC grabbed 51 rebounds in its win over Duke to end the regular season on Feb. 27. It marked the seventh time this season the Tar Heels have gotten 50 or more boards in a game, with the season high 63 against Syracuse. The Tar Heels average 43.1 rebounds per game,  2nd among ACC teams and 13th in the NCAA.
• The Tar Heels have made more free throws this season (420 on 591 attempts) than opponents have attempted (361, with 256 makes).
• UNC is 14-1 this season when shooting 40 percent or better from the field. The Tar Heels shot 43.7 percent in the ACC Tournament loss to Virginia Tech for their best shooting percentage in a defeat this season.
