Gonzaga beat San Francisco on Monday to advance to its 25th consecutive West Coast Tournament final, where the Bulldogs will face Saint Mary's on Tuesday. At stake for Gonzaga is the overall No.1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

A victory over the Gaels would ensure that top spot in the bracket for Gonzaga for the second straight season. However, a loss would put the overall No. 1 seed in some doubt.

I do not think there is any danger of dropping off the top line entirely, but top six teams in the bracket are pretty tight together.

The race for the other No. 1 seeds could be pretty interesting. There are several teams still in play.

In the SEC, if either Auburn or Kentucky wins the conference tournament, that team will be a No. 1 seed. The Tigers would have a shot at the overall No. 1 if Gonzaga loses, but I do not think Kentucky would pass Gonzaga.

Arizona probably has to win the Pac-12 to stay on the top line. The Wildcats picked up a couple of nice nonconference wins, but the overall quality of their victories will make it hard to stay on top if they go down in Las Vegas.

The Big 12 could produce two No. 1 seeds if things break the right way. The best case scenario for that would be for Kansas, currently a No. 2 seed,  to beat No. 1 seed Baylor for the conference tournament title, but even then, it might take an Arizona loss or a lower-seeded team to win the SEC.

Should chaos reign, there is an outside shot for Purdue to land on the top line should the Boilermakers win the Big Ten, and beat Wisconsin and Illinois to do so. That would also mean Arizona, Auburn, Kentucky, Baylor and Kansas would have to lose in their conference tournaments.

What about the other No. 2 seed, Duke?  The Blue Devils' tournament resume is too soft to move up to a No. 1 seed despite wins over Kentucky and Gonzaga. They have as many Quad 2 losses (3) as the other seven teams on the top two lines of the bracket combined and a Quad 3 loss as well. Also, no other team mentioned in this column has less of a chance to improve their tournament profile in their tournament.
