Think of sipping an ice-cold beer on the planet Hoth as Luke Skywalker gets pulled into the Wampa's lair or enjoying creme brulee with E.T. All these unforgettable movie moments that live in our memories will be brought to life at Boerne's newest pizza spot.
Darkside Brick Oven Pizza Co. is not your average pizza spot. With props from some of the biggest movies of the 1980s, Darkside will be more than meets the eye when it opens up to guests this September.

Photo Courtesy of Michael HawesLife-sized Imperial speed bike troopers from Return of the Jedi, a DeLorean Time Machine from the Back to the Future franchise, and a few surprises await guests ready to grab a slice of nostalgia. It will almost be like walking into Universal Studios with high-quality props surrounding the restaurant.
Roughly 85% of the props in the restaurant were specifically created for Darkside Brick Oven Pizza Co. Hawes collaborates and creates props with artists for the one-of-a-kind custom pieces.
Hawes, 53, an avid Star Wars fan since he was 7 years old, has one of the world's largest private Star Wars collections. Imagine stepping into the Death Star. The gallery sits at 3,500 square-feet and Hawes is adding a studio skill room that will expand the gallery by 1,500 square-feet.
Hawes understands that all the movie scenes and props in the world would be for not if the food is not worth the trip. He noted that consistency will be key for the restaurant's success. Hawes plans on using New York pizza recipes that are over 60 years old, which will then be cooked in the woodfire brick oven. Don't want a slice of pizza? Guests can also grab calzones or salads.

But the main goal for him is to give families a place where they can disconnect and enjoy great food, an awesome atmosphere, and a spot where they can be happy together.
Hawes previously worked with the Landmark Entertainment Group, which has made some iconic Universal Studios attractions like Jurassic Park: The Ride and The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. He did model-building work with the company and is also the owner of Hawes Properties and Performance Off-Road, which his son now owns.

Photo Courtesy of Michael HawesThe construction of the 4,000-square-foot ground-up building cost $2 million and began eight months ago. There will be three patio areas for guests to enjoy and the interior can seat 60 people, Hawes said. There will also be a diorama exhibit room, which will seat eight to nine people with some classic Star Wars settings.
Hawes dedicated the restaurant to his mother, Nora Hawes, who died in August 2022. She was an important person to him, and he said that he knows she would have been proud of the restaurant. "Her support, no matter what I wanted to do, she was always there," Hawes said.
