Nolin Lake State Park has been named one of the top 100 “secret beaches” in the U.S. by a travel website, which praised its crystal-clear waters and serene surroundings.
“This 5,795-acre park is located in the heart of the rolling hills of Central Kentucky and is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Mammoth Cave National Park,” Family Destinations Guide said on its website. “...The lake itself is a stunning sight with its crystal-clear waters and scenic shoreline. The park’s lush forests are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, wild turkey, and bald eagles.”
Nolin Lake secured the 76th spot on the “America’s favorite 100 secret beaches” listing.
Located just outside Mammoth Cave National Park in Edmonson County, which itself is less than a 40-minute drive north of Bowling Green, Nolin Lake State Park offers 32 campsites with hookups for water and electricity, plus 27 other “primitive campsites.”
There’s a public beach, shower and laundry facilities, along with a playground. If you’re into fishing, the lake offers an abundant supply of bass, catfish, crappie and walleye, according to the park’s website.

Hiking & Biking
Nolin Lake State Park features a hiking trail just a little more than 9 miles long, and it’s open year-round.
After a good rain, there’s a small waterfall, but be sure to wear proper footwear if you take on the trail. It’s classified as a moderately difficult hike, according to the park’s website.
Swimming & Boating
Nolin Lake’s beach opens Memorial Day and the season lasts until Labor Day. No pets are permitted in the beach area. Severe weather may prompt beach closures, so be sure to check the local forecast and call ahead at 270-286-4240.
If you have a boat, you can also launch it from a ramp on the lake. Just be sure to wear a life jacket.
Birding
Bring your binoculars so you can catch an up-close glimpse of great blue heron, Canadian geese, wild turkey and even the occasional bald eagle.
Have a picnic
There are tables and grills, along with restrooms and a picnic shelter for rent. Contact the park’s office for more information.
