Nardonne’s La Famiglia Pizzeria has closed its Atascadero location after more than 40 years — but you won’t have to go far if you are craving a slice of the beloved restaurant’s signature Sicilian-style pizzas.

Nardonne’s closed its doors suddenly at 8501 El Camino Real on April 23, notifying customers of the closure with a sign posted on the restaurant’s window.

“Thank you to all our dedicated customers,” management wrote on the sign. “We appreciate the last 43 years of support. Grandma is semi-retiring.”

The first Nardonne’s opened in Baywood Park in 1976, under the ownership of John and Janice Dougherty. In 1980 Barbara Lehmann opened a franchise of the popular pizza restaurant in Atascadero.

Other locations in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo also opened up, though those have since shuttered.

Over the years, ownership has flipped back and forth for both the Baywood Park and Atascadero businesses, with the Dougherty family ultimately returning to owning the pizza restaurants in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Long-time customers were upset by the news of Nardonne’s closing when it broke on social media.

“Very sad, I have been going to Nardonne’s for many years,” one person wrote on Nextdoor. “Best pizza anywhere.”

“My family has enjoyed their pizza over the last several years,” another person wrote. “Definitely going to miss, but Los Osos isn’t too far away.”

Nardonne’s La Famiglia Pizzeria remains open at 715 Santa Maria Ave., Suite A, in Baywood Park, according to management.
