Google has launched a new tool to help people identify fake AI images online, following warnings that the technology could become a wellspring for misinformation.

Users of Google's image search will now be able to see “additional context” alongside pictures, including details on when the image first appeared on Google and any related news stories. The tool, named About This Image, is intended to surface news stories about fake images that have been subsequently debunked.

The launch of the new tool comes after a number of realistic-looking fake images went viral on the internet, including AI-generated pictures appearing to show Donald Trump being arrested.

Tools such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and OpenAI’s DALL-E can be used to generate hyper realistic images of situations that never actually happened using just a few prompts, words and phrases.

Security officials including British cyber chief Sir Jeremy Fleming have warned that new AI tools such as these could have potentially devastating consequences for misinformation and propaganda.

One of the first major showcases of the new technology was an image appearing to show the Pope wearing a white puffer jacket that went viral in March.

A Chicago construction worker claimed to have created the picture while “trying to figure out ways to make something funny”. Pablo Xavier told Buzzfeed in March that he had used the AI art tool Midjourney, adding: “I just thought it was funny to see the Pope in a funny jacket.”

Pictures of Donald Trump apparently being arrested by police also went viral earlier this year. Eliot Higgins, the co-founder of investigative journalism website Bellingcat, created the images using Midjourney.

Cory Dunton, Google’s product manager for search, said: “With this background information on an image, you can get a better understanding of whether an image is reliable – or if you need to take a second look.”

Google is playing catch-up in the AI race after Microsoft-backed ChatGPT became a global sensation late last year.
