Former UConn women's basketball player Dorka Juhasz is fighting for one of the final roster spots on the Minnesota Lynx, according to head coach Cheryl Reeve.
The regular season begins Friday and WNBA rosters must be set by 5 p.m. on Thursday.
The Lynx have 14 players on their roster as of Wednesday afternoon, so the team will need to cut two players by the deadline. Minnesota has two experienced post players on the roster in Jessica Shepard (6-foot-4) and Damiris Dantas (6-foot-3).
So it will be a matter of roster construction for Reeve.
"Well Dorka's trying to make our team, you know, as we get into the final hours if you will, (until) we have to submit our final rosters," Reeve said Wednesday afternoon. "I think once we determine which direction we're gonna go in, I'll know more about how Dorka will fit in."
Minnesota selected the Hungarian with pick No. 16 in the second round of the 2023 WNBA Draft. Juhasz would be joining another former Husky, Napheesa Collier, who was recently named the team's captain this season.
The 6-foot-5 forward doubled her output from last season, sparking interest from WNBA teams. She averaged 14.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks per game for UConn last season.
Juhasz also displayed an expanded offensive over her college career, which began at Ohio State before she transferred to UConn. Her perimeter game steadily improved at UConn.
This skill is definitely a positive as she tries to make the Lynx' roster.
"She has been a player that really from Day 1 has a maturity about her, which is what I anticipated with her," Reeve said. "I think being coached by Geno (Auriemma) has really helped her kind of accept, you know, coaching/criticism, whatever, how people would view it.
"She's been unfazed by most of what's happened in our camps. So she has that maturity. Skill set wise, I think we're still learning the full identity of what she offers, but she certainly has great size and has some comfortability in some of our offensive schemes."
