DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have revamped their lineup for 2022, but one thing remains the same:
Robbie Grossman in the leadoff spot.
Grossman, who started 87 games in the top spot in 2021, will hit first as the Tigers open the 2022 season against the Chicago White Sox on Friday at Comerica Park.
New acquisition Austin Meadows will hit second, pushing Akil Baddoo down to seventh in the order.
The rest of the lineup remains similar to the way manager A.J. Hinch structured it in spring training: Shortstop Javier Baez, third baseman Jeimer Candelario and designated hitter Miguel Cabrera will hit in the middle of the order in the 3-4-5 spots; veteran Jonathan Schoop will hit sixth; rookie Spencer Torkelson will debut at No. 8; and catcher Tucker Barnhart will round out the order in the last spot.
Infielder Harold Castro, outfielder Victor Reyes, catcher/outfielder Eric Haase and catcher Dustin Garneau will be available off the bench.
“I like what I’ve always liked about Robbie, which is a quality at-bat, high on-base, power threat. He’s been a great presence in our lineup,” Hinch said. “When you add Meadows, it lengthens the lineup in a lot of different ways. It gives the opportunity to move Akil to seventh. That takes a ton of speed and power to that position.”
Hinch said Grossman might not lead off every day. In fact, there might be a different lineup as early as tomorrow.
Including starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, five members of the Opening Day lineup were acquired or promoted to the team since the end of last season.
The Tigers will face White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Former Tigers second baseman Josh Harrison is in the Opening Day starting lineup for the Sox.
