Chaps shoot best round of the week, move up one spot in final round of Ryan Palmer Invitational - LCU Athletics

AMARILLO, Texas - The Chaps closed out their week in Amarillo with their best team round of golf, moving up one spot in the standings to a 16th place finish at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 4. 

LCU shot a 13-over 293 in the third round at the Amarillo Country Club, leapfrogging region foe Regis for the 16th place spot and missing out on 15th place by just two strokes. The Chaps finished the tournament with a three-round, 48-over 888, just one stroke ahead of their score at their last tournament, the Sam Proal Invitational in Pueblo, Colo.

The Chaps did well on par fives throughout the tournament, shooting two-under for an average score of 4.93 on the course's longest holes.

Braxton Floyd paced the Chaps on the final day of the event, carding a one-over 71, his second-best round of the season so far. Floyd finished tied for 50th with a three-round, seven-over 217. 

While most of the LCU team struggled on par threes, Floyd was consistent on the shortest holes at the Amarillo Country Club, shooting just one-over for an average score of 3.08. He, along with Jackson Comer, also succeeded on par fives, shooting one-under with an average score of 4.83. Floyd led the Chaps with 35 pars across three rounds of golf.

Hayden Bowman improved by one stroke from the second round, shooting a four-over 74 on the final day. The freshman finishes tied for 57th with an eight-over 218 score, beating out his mark from the Sam Proal Invitational by six strokes. Bowman led the Chaps with 10 birdies, including three in the third round.

Comer improved from the second round to the third by six whole strokes, shooting an impressive two-over 72 in the final round. That mark beats his old personal best single round score of 77 he shot twice last season by five whole strokes. Comer finished the tournament tied for 83rd after shooting a three-round, 18-over 228 score, beating his old personal best three round score of 236 at the 2021 Midwestern State Invitational.

Jake Bowen shot a six-over 76 in the final round, the same score he shot in the opening round on Monday. Bowen finished the tournament tied for 85th with a 19-over 229. His 34 pars were the second most of any Chap throughout the week.

Tiaan de Jager also shot a six-over 76 in the third round, as he finished 88th with a three-round, 22-over 232 score.

No. 6 Oklahoma Christian won the team event championship by six strokes over Midwestern State, shooting a 17-under 823 for the week. The Eagles' Oskari Nikku and Exequiel Rodriguez shared the individual championship, tying for first with six-under, 204s for the week.

The Chaps will have almost a month off before wrapping up the fall season at the RJGA South Central Shootout in El Paso, Texas on Oct. 24-25.
