It’s not always easy to give up your sweet tooth and a new ranking likely won’t do you any favors if you’re hoping to cut back on sugar.
A recently published list from The Daily Meal reveals the best dessert spots in all 50 states. And in Georgia, there’s one that won out over spots specializing in doughnuts and ice cream.

Café Intermezzo may not focus on southern sweets, but the European-inspired coffeehouse has lots to offer, and that’s what put it on the list. With four Atlanta-area locations, the idea for the spot came in 1971, when founder and CEO Brian Olson traveled to Germany. There, he visited a Konditorei, or bakery-cafe, in Berlin before making stops at others throughout the country and neighboring Austria.
The visits “brought conviction that the Europäische Kaffeehaus (European coffeehouse), as a significant Place in the lives of its guests, had a potential for a home in America. As a respite in a person’s day, a place to stop, to relax, to think…as an ‘intermission’ between all of the activities and responsibilities, Olson believed that the Kaffeehaus would provide a distinct and wonderful refuge in the ever-expanding world of fast-food and environments designed to expedite takeout beverages and foods,” the website states.

Today, the eatery, which specializes in desserts but also offers food, coffee and cocktails, offers more than 70 scratch-made pies, cakes and pastries, The Daily Meal reported.
Café Intermezzo has locations in Dunwoody, Alpharetta and Midtown, which are open as late as 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. There’s also a location at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
To come up with the list, The Daily Meal scoured online reviews from residents and tourists as well as rankings listed in magazines, travel guides and newspapers. Dessert variety was also a factor as well as how late such shops were open.
