Ohio’s trying to spot all the bald eagle nests in the state: How to help - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For the first time in eight years, Ohio is trying to count all the bald eagle nests in the state. But it needs help.

The Division of Natural Resources is asking Ohioans to report any bald eagle nest sightings as the birds settle in to lay eggs and incubate them in February and March.

Wildlife biologists estimate that Ohio hosted more than 350 nesting pairs of bald eagles in 2019, according to a news release. It’s a remarkable increase from 40 years ago, when there were only four pairs of nesting bald eagles in the state. Bald eagles are no longer endangered in Ohio, and there hasn’t been a full count of the population since they were delisted in 2012.

Having an count of bald eagle nests, instead of estimating based on select areas of the state, will allow state officials to properly assess conservation efforts and measure the species’ comeback in Ohio.

“From the Ohio River to Lake Erie, our state has become an ideal home for the bald eagle,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said in the release. “This is a great opportunity to get outdoors and see this soaring raptor, all while providing a valuable conservation service to our state.”

Bald eagles in Ohio tend to nest near water, because they mainly eat fish and carrion. In the northern part of the state, that’s Lake Erie. In the southern part, that’s major rivers like the Great Miami or the Hocking. Nests are found in trees.

The western Lake Erie region, including Ottawa, Lucas, Erie and Sandusky counties, draw large amounts of bald eagles, according to the release.

In recent years, Ohio’s Industrial Valley became more of a hot spot for bald eagles. The first successful bald eagle nest in more than a century came in 2018, and ever since more bald eagles are showing up near the Cuyahoga River.

If you see a nest, stay at least 100 feet away. It is illegal to disturb bald eagle nests.

You can submit sightings on ODNR’s website from Feb. 1 to March 31. The state will provide online updates on the project.
